May Spa of the Month | The Salthouse Hotel, Northern Ireland

For May’s Spa of the Month, we are delighted to shine the spotlight on a luxury eco hotel a little closer to home: The Salthouse Hotel, Northern Ireland. Perched above the quaint seaside town of Ballycastle, The Salthouse provides the ultimate backdrop for unforgettable adventures, coastal getaways, and weekend retreats. With unrivalled views of the Atlantic Ocean and the luxury of being able to escape the hustle and bustle of modern day living, here you can feel more connected to the outdoors and are encouraged to discover your ‘coastal calm’.

Luxury Eco Hotel

This beautiful VOYA partner blends tradition and nature through the use of materials associated with the region – namely salt – which remains a central theme throughout the hotel. The local landscape was shaped by the production of salt, and it plays a key part in the history of the local area, so it is inspiring to see The Salthouse embrace its stunning location, interior and exterior based on this tradition.

There is a selection of 24 stylishly appointed rooms and suites to enjoy your stay in. Ranging from Serene Rooms and Spacious Rooms to the Salthouse Suite, an individually designed luxurious suite which offers scenic views of the ocean and countryside, each room is designed to provide the ultimate sanctuary for guests. All rooms offer use of the facilities at the Spa at The Salthouse.

What’s more, a number of Luxury-Eco Lodges are also available to provide a true home away from home escape. In keeping with actions to minimise impact on the environment, each lodge is ‘off-grid’ with renewable energy coming from the local wind and solar supply.

The lodges are set amongst woodland trees at the foot of Knocklayde Forest and feature a double height open plan living area and a mezzanine window in the master suite, meaning you can switch off and enjoy the tranquil views from the comfort of your own space.

Sleeping up to 6 guests, the lodges are ideal for couples, families and larger groups looking to take some time out and leave it all behind.

As well as stunning accommodation, The Salthouse Bar and Restaurant offers arguably the best views in the hotel with the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. Customer demand has prompted the hotel to introduce a second restaurant on site later this summer, with a menu that will offer locally sourced ingredients where possible in an aim to remain loyal to its commitment to sustainability, while providing more choice for the ethically minded traveller.

Sustainable Luxury

The Salthouse Hotel has a commitment to both SMART luxury and sustainable luxury, and like VOYA, does everything it can to minimise its impact on the environment. As a carbon neutral hotel with various eco features, you can rest assured that The Salthouse is testament to the fact that luxury can also be sustainable. Impressively, there is a 225kw wind turbine and 150kw solar PV panels onsite, which combined could power 150 households for a year. Electricity in the hotel is provided by this wind and solar generation, and the heating and hot water is primarily provided by air source heat pumps.

As well as numerous other eco features including electric car chargers, LED lighting with motion sensors and outside temperature sensors that enable the building to adapt to its environmental conditions, The Salthouse also does not use single use plastics.

In VOYA’s partnership with Plastic Bank, we have pledged to stop 2 million plastic bottles from entering the ocean. This is equivalent to over 45,000kg of plastic and means for every VOYA product sold, we will help to prevent 3 plastic bottles from entering the ocean. With our common commitment to sustainability, we are very proud of our partnership with The Salthouse Hotel.

Won over by its eco-credentials, The Salthouse was also named as the best hotel in Northern Ireland by the Sunday Times' chief travel writer in 2022.

Spa at the Salthouse

Of course, The Salthouse could not be our spa of the month without us talking about the Spa at The Salthouse.

The spa facilities are all designed to create a sense of escapism from the pressure of busy lives and what better way to unwind than enjoying the wonderful views of Fairhead and Rathlin whilst relaxing in the outdoor spaces, which are part of the thermal journey available at the spa. Choose from two large hot tubs to sit and gaze at the scenery or take it all in from the panoramic window in the spacious sauna.

Seaweed baths are also available at The Salthouse, which have been used for generations in the care and repair of the skin. Fucus Serratus is the amazing type of seaweed used in VOYA seaweed baths, which survives by filtering the ocean for nutrients and as a result, amasses a huge amount of minerals and vitamins. The antioxidant compounds found naturally in this seaweed have long been known to have pronounced anti-ageing, skin conditioning, repairing and hydrating effects.

If you are indoors, you have the choice of steam room aromatherapy vapours, heated day beds, a relaxation area and warm tropical showers, which are complete with dramatic lighting and are ideal to use in between treatments.

A variety of luxury VOYA treatments are on offer on the menu, enabling guests to benefit from the restorative and healing powers of seaweed.

From top-to-toe massages for the ultimate journey of relaxation and stimulating body scrubs to wellbeing-focused experiences that help you to achieve the perfect night’s sleep, the VOYA body treatments offer total luxury to completely unwind.

The experienced Salthouse Spa therapists use a system of consultation and skin analysis in the facials, and you can add VOYA’s hand harvested Laminaria Seaweed leaves onto your treatment if you’d like an added layer of luxury.

For those wanting to experience the best of both worlds, opt for the Deluxe Facial which begins with a relaxing back massage before hydrating the face with a dual-action mask and the organic marine eye treatment, which aids lymphatic drainage and reduces puffiness.

All VOYA experiences at The Salthouse are exquisite, aiming to improve your overall health, skin and wellbeing.
